Having plenty of extra cash when traveling as a couple is always a good idea. However, if you want to travel on a budget, you should employ a few money-saving strategies.
Use these simple strategies to make the most of your travel budget!
Tip #1 – Select three or four travel destinations that you both enjoy. Examine each destination’s prices to see which offers the most affordable travel.
Once you’ve decided on a few destinations, research them online. Look for package deals and compare them. Which location(s) has the best pricing?
Tip #2 – Plan a trip to a destination during the off-season. Consider that visiting a location outside the tourist season will save you a lot of money.
Off-season travel saves money on accommodations and many attractions. Depending on where you live, traveling to your destination is cheaper during the off-season when demand is lower. Winter airfare to Europe, for example, is roughly half the price of summer fares – by hundreds of dollars per ticket!
Many summer tourist destinations switch to off-season rates in early September, the day after Labor Day when the kids return to school. Traveling with your partner the week after Labor Day will save you money while still allowing you to enjoy the warm weather attractions. You’ll also avoid fighting the crowds.
Tip #3 – Save as a couple and individually before the trip. Setting aside money to pay for the vacation is essential to planning a trip.
Each of you should also make your own plans to save a few extra dollars for the trip. This will help you save more money and make the process more fun. Challenge each other to see who can save the most money.
Cut out those expensive coffee drinks, work lunches, and other unnecessary expenditures in your daily lives to save money for your trip.
Tip #4 – Select a hotel that provides complimentary breakfast. Nothing beats two free meals to kick off a day of exploring on vacation. To entice visitors, many hotels offer continental breakfasts.
Get a few granola bars and some fresh fruit while you’re there in case you get hungry before or after lunch.
Vacations require a lot of energy and can work up a big appetite. Complimentary snacks will help you stretch your dollar even further.
Tip #5 – Sharing dinners at restaurants. Consider ordering an entrée and splitting it between you if you both enjoy some of the same foods. Even if you each ordered soup or a salad, your dinner bill will be lower.
Some restaurants will charge a late fee of $2.00 or $3.00 if you tell them you plan to split the entrée. However, developing the habit of sharing dinners when traveling demonstrates that you are extremely frugal.
Tip #6 – Bring reusable individual water containers with you. When you arrive at the hotel, look for a nearby grocery or drug store where you can buy cheap bottled water by the gallon. Bring the water to your hotel room in the evening and fill your individual containers.
If you have a refrigerator in your hotel room, chill your water overnight. Grab your water bottles the following day before heading out to see the sights. Bottled water can cost up to $5.00 per bottle. You can save $20 or more per day between the two of you by providing your water in this manner.
You may even decide to bring a portable water filtration jug with you. That way, you can filter the water before placing it in your bottles. Most hotel rooms have a kettle. You can boil the hotel room water, let it cool to room temperature, and then filter it. You’re still drinking healthy water and saving on expensive bottled water.
You and your partner should have many wonderful vacations ahead of you. Traveling off-season, staying at hotels that offer free breakfasts, sharing dinners, and filling your water bottles are all cost-cutting strategies. Use these cost-effective suggestions when planning your next vacation with your beloved.
